Project Verde

The All-Island Schools Science Association (AISSA) is an organization that functions in different fields for the betterment of society. So, on the 15th of February 2023, we organized a beach clean-up program at the pristine shores of Mt. Lavinia Beach in Dehiwala.

As Sri Lanka is an island, beaches are both a natural treasure and a spot for recreational activities. Unfortunately, due to human activities in recent times, beaches are subjected to pollution and degradation. This could lead to significant threats to marine life and ecosystems. Beach clean-up initiatives play a vital role in preserving these valuable ecosystems by removing harmful waste and educating the community about responsible waste management.

As responsible citizens, we stood up to the challenge by organizing the Mt.Lavinia beach clean-up project. The event was a success with over 50 participants aimed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and promote a cleaner and sustainable coastline. This event served as a testament to the association’s dedication to instilling
a sense of environmental responsibility and sustainable practices in the younger generation. The participants showed incredible dedication and teamwork throughout the day. Divided into smaller groups, they scoured the beach, picking up plastic bottles, polythene, food wrappers, cigarette butts,
and various other forms of litter. The energetic atmosphere was contagious, with everyone working tirelessly to restore the beach’s natural beauty.

By the end of the program, a substantial amount of trash had been collected. AISSA intends to continue organizing beach clean-up programs and other green life projects in the future. This initiative will surely leave an inspiring message for many years to come.
